What Are Royalties?

Royalties are obnoxiously complicated, but here’s a basic breakdown.

Every time a song is played anywhere (radio, online streaming, public performance, Youtube, etc.) it generates income called a “royalty”; paid out to the writer and performer.

Individual royalties are small (sometimes fractions of pennies), but collectively they can add up.

The best part: there is no limit on how much can be earned; because there is no limit on how many times a song can be heard.  Heavily played songs can generate million$ over decades.

For independent artists like myself who write their own music, the earning potential is maximized.  I don’t have to share any of my royalties with a corporate entity.
